Recycle Computers in Safe and Environment-friendly Ways

My son recently graduated from high school and as a reward, I bought him a new PC from Apple. Then, I remembered that I still have an old personal computer that has now become a dust collector in our storage room. It’s old and I doubt if it will still be of use so I thought I’d recycle computers. However, there are several options that I’m mulling over. Here are some of the options on my how to recycle computers list:

Dump your computers in a garbage bin – this is the most convenient way to put a computer away, and also the most awful thing that everyone could do to recycle computers. Computers are composed of electronic components that are harmful to the environment when you do not recycle computers properly. A computer monitor, especially if it’s an old CRT monitor, can emit harmful gases when the screen breaks. Your local community might not also approve of it so let’s erase the garbage truck or bin option to recycle computers.

Send it to a local recycle center – local community organizations recycle computers and other appliances like television, microwave oven, etc. When you send it to the center they will recycle computers and recycle the parts following safety precautions. Sending old computers to these centers require the slightest work and effort. You also do the environment a favor for disposing your old computers appropriately.

Auction old computers to eBay – you can recycle computers wholly or take it apart and then sell the recycle computers’ parts on eBay or other auction sites. Many people buy recycled computers or parts even if the units are a few years old. Don’t expect to profit much from your effort to recycle computers although it can help compensate for the cost of a new computer.

Salvage or recycle computers to electronic retailers - most computer manufacturers and electronic retailers recycle computers or computer parts. Some recycle computers for a fee, but they can give you a coupon that you can use if you wan to buy anything from them. Some computer manufacturers also recycle computers free of charge if you purchase a new unit and will even provide postage fee. Electronic retailers recycle computers and accept other electronic appliances and products as well.

Be creative – if you want to recycle computers creatively, go to websites like www.instructables.com and find out what you can do to recycle computers. The site has lots of creative ways to reconstruct and recycle your computers. Just a few days ago, I learned that I could use the computer case as a barbecue grill. That’s some awesome and creative way to recycle computers!

Give old, but working computers to charity – this is the most worthwhile means to recycle computers. If your old computers are still in working condition, consider giving them as donation to schools, orphanages, or even to your friends or relatives. You can also ‘swap’ your computers for another item or just give it away. You can find such sites in Craiglist or bargain sites.

recycle computersContact the manufacturer – Dell recycles computers from their consumers. Most manufacturers do so if you want to recycle computers, call your computer manufacturer to get more information.

Caution about PII

If you want to recycle computers, ensure that there is nothing left of your PII (personal identifiable information) on the computers that can identify you or Before you recycle computers, wipe the data on your hard drive by using specialized software to protect your identity and privacy.
